Another week had passed by and things seemed to be going pretty well with all thirty-eight children in my bloated caseload. Parents seemed to be complying with their case plan tasks and cases were being closed. To date I’ve had no runaways to concern myself with and no pregnancies. When Phoebe and I talked about certain children in our cases, I now had to distinguish between the two Doniella’s by referring to Doniella Bernacello as Doniella B and Doniella Desantis as Doniella D. I think she followed me pretty well when I resorted to using the abbreviations. Nevertheless, the train that had run so smoothly for a week was about to be derailed.

Angelina had called to tell me that she and Porsha had gotten into a physical altercation and that Porsha was now in state custody. It had not been two months and the placement there was falling apart. I took the information down on paper concerning Porsha’s whereabouts in the New York foster care system. Before hanging up, I asked Angelina if it was possible that she would take Porsha back in and she said it was highly unlikely. I asked her to think about it and then we hung up.

This was not the first time that a relative in one of my caseloads came to the rescue of one of their own and then things turned sour. What they failed to realize was that children who had been in the foster care system had all kinds of psychological hang ups and other emotional issues stemming from the trauma of being torn away from their parents or whoever their caregiver was. Some of these children have been in the system for years and have learned to exist by a different code of conduct in their efforts to survive in the system. When a family member came into the picture, one who wanted to save the child, there was no class available for them to take and no manual for them to thumb through to address the issues they might, and often do, run into while caring for these children. Usually when these problems surfaced there was a cultural clash of mega proportion. The child was left feeling misunderstood and the relative was left feeling underappreciated and sometimes even betrayed by the child. The remedy would be for all parties concerned to attend some sort of ‘home reunion phasing in’ type program that addressed, or at least alerted, relatives to the problems former foster care children might have. But to date, I was unaware of any such program. The relatives would come forth and the children were dropped in their laps. And they’re supposed to live happily ever after.

It was Tuesday, which meant another long trip up to St Augustine with Doniella B to visit with her mother Maria. By now, she and I had established a very good rapport. I was also on good terms with her mother.

I arrived around three that afternoon to pick up Doniella B. And again, she was waiting on me but this time she was anything but her usual perky self.
